Evaluation Task

Evaluation Task

In this evaluation task, I will show how our group answered several questions. For each question, we will use different software to present our answer. As this will take a while to complete, we will split the group into pairs of two and work on different software.

Question 1: In what ways does your local radio news broadcast use, develop or challenge forms and conventions real

Here is the first draft that we did. We all came to a conclusion that this definitely isn't of an A - GRADE standard. As it wasn't as good as it possibly can be so we decided to redo it and make it of a higher quality. The final piece will be found below.

Question 2: How does your local radio news represent particular social groups?

Question 3: Who would distribute your media product and why?

Question 4: Who would be the audience for your particular media product?

Question 5: How do you address/attract your audience?

Evaluation 6: What have you learnt about the technologies for the process of constructing this media product?

Evaluation 7: looking on your prlimanery task what feel like yo have learnt so far?

Main Task

Introduction

Our main aim is to produce a 5 minute local radio News Broadcast. It will include:
  • Title music
  • at least one presenter
  • at least two specialist reporters
  • at least two Outside Broadcasts (OBs)
  • at least one interview
  • at least one vox populi (one vox pop sequence)
  • some sound effects
  • an organised structure

In this part of my blog I will set out all of the elements which meet the brief. Looking at my research and planning, I have discovered that local radio news broadcasts are usually 5 minutes long, which is very similar to the brief. I have also found out that they generally include about 7 - 10 stories. So I am going to use the 7 codes and conventions of the genre of local radio news that I discovered in my research and planning to help construct my own local radio news broadcast.

First News Item

Part of my job is to find local news items. I found this digital newspaper and decided to use the Kilburn literary festival for the news value of this week. I want to find out whether there will be another event running. We thought that it would be an effective news item to talk about as it was the first time Kilburn ever had a literary festival. I also wanted to find out whether it had an affect on the local community.

I travelled to West Hampstead and Kilburn to find out about these news events. Unfortunately, the organizers weren't there so we were unable to gather any important information regarding our research. Part of my task was to create a script that sounded organic, but also explanatory. I will accomplish this by going over my recording several times, making changes so that it is near perfect - or maybe even better.

This is the first script that me, Olamide and Randy wrote. Sade wasn't involved in this task as she wasn't in. We had to make do with the people who attended class and come up with a final script. We went over the script several times to make sure that it made sense and that it would be clear to the audience. Also, we made sure that it would appeal to the whole target audience. We used coloured fonts as it was easy to identify each speaker.

I gradually built up a news item which includes a:

  • Reporter
  • Interviewer
  • Interviewee

The editing I did on audacity

I used the time shift tool to move each audio just after the other so that the sounds won't overlap. If this happened, it will sound unprofessional and it will complicate the whole recording. This is why using the time shift is important as it contributes greatly to a better interview.

These images show the public noise we added to make the interview more realistic. It gives a completely different environment and it also allows us to identify who's speaking more correctly.

I used the fit project tool so I could see all of our work without having to scroll downwards/upwards and sideways which would be time-consuming. I was also able to see how long it would run for.

This is the interview that was uploaded to Soundcloud. The sound on audacity was turned into an MP3 and then exported it onto Sound-cloud. After this was done, I put it in my blog. I will gather a recommended target audience to listen to this audio and ask them to give me feedback on what I've done well and what I've done wrongly.

This sound audio is from Free Sound. We chose to use this sound audio as it would make the broadcast more realistic. The background noise had to differ from when the interviewer was speaking and when the reporter was speaking. This was so it seemed like they were in completely different places which made it more believable. Realistically,  you would expect to hear people in the background of an interview full of people in a book competition.

                Second News Item

Our second Task was to create a news broadcast that had occurred this week in Westminster. It had a dramatic affect on the local community. We chose a topic to discuss that not only involved Westminster, but one that affected the whole of London and Britain - Remembrance day, which marked the beginning of World War I. This was the topic that we chose as we thought that it was the most relevant topic to mention and it related to everyone as it is the one day we remember those who died in the war.

Our main focus was the Tower of London being filled with thousands of poppies around the perimeter of the garden. This was all done in memory of the fallen people that lost their lives in the war. As a group, we decided to talk about this event as it was the first time it had happened and it was quite a spectacular news item to be talking about as it involves one of the most important moments during the year.

We decided to do a live report at the Tower of London involving the poppies as this is the first time in a hundred years that this has happened. The group looked at an article on the evening standard about thousands of people gathering around to see the spectacle and they were taking pictures of the poppies around the Tower of London. We read the article so that we could create a script to record based on this amazing event on November the 11th.

The date of this article is one day before remembrance day which is the day World War one begun. As you  can see above, there are thousands of people that have been attracted to this event by this phenomenal spectacle in preparation for remembrance day. I think that this was an excellent news item to use for our recording because it undoubtedly grabs the public's attention which makes them respect Remembrance day and attend the event.

I was a reporter at the event talking to a person who expressed their thoughts about what the Poppies surrounding the tower represents and how young people also died in this war. Sade was the host who introduced herself saying what channel it was (BBC) then going straight into the news topic which are the poppies in the tower. Randy was the person that I was interviewing and Olamide was the Co-host who spoke later on after the interview between me and Randy. Everyone contributed towards giving ideas in terms of what to say and when to say it. For example Sade was the host of BBC News so she had to say 'good morning, welcome to BBC news'.

                SCRIPT

This is the first draft of the script that we wrote for our recording. We will add to this script as we thought it was too basic. We went over it several times as the microphone kept recognizing background voices because we was in a busy environment.

Here is a form of editing that we did on audacity after we recorded individually. We used the time shift tool to move the sounds into the right place and order so that none of our sounds would overlap with anyone else's which would cause a lot of faults in our recording. The recording below is a draft which has audio bleed which made it very hard to focus on the person who is speaking.

This is a draft of our interview. As you heard, there is a lot of background noise as we wasn't in a suitable environment for our recording. To improve this recording, it shall be done in a much quieter area so it sounds more professional and is easy to identify the speaker. I will have audience feedback on this first draft of our interview. This could help me improve my production skills as i will be sure to receive negative feedback.

                Third news item

For our third news item, we had to find local news which we thought was most attractive to us. We chose to use this story as it is a controversial issue that could be greatly spoken about. We also thought that it would be easy to come up with ideas for the script and we highly anticipated that it would be a good outcome. It is quite an interesting topic to talk about as it's unusual and it's something you'd expect a school not to do

These images show members of the production team (including myself) recording people on their opinion about our news item for our vox pop audio. We spoke to three women in the clinic (as shown above) and they gave their different views on our news. We also went into a hotel and questioned the receptionist. Luckily, she had a child of primary school age which benefitted us more as we were able to gather reliable, valid information.

This screenshot of Audacity shows our interview recording including the general public who shared their thoughts on our news topic which included proximity, impact and it just about includes conflict. The highlighted audio shows our first vox pop audio, and because it sounded quiet, we decided to amplify it so that it would be easier to listen to and sound more appealing to our audience.

This screenshot shows us using the 'fade in' effect. We got the idea from listening to other news broadcasts such as BBC Radio Scotland, and by listening to other well-prepared interviews which we thought sounded proffesional and appealing. It also makes our interview seem more pragmatic as it is something done across the News industry.

Similar to the 'fade in' effect, we used the 'fade out' effect which we thought would have a positive effect on our blog as it seems and most importantly, sounds more interesting and appealing. This helped develop my knowledge of using the fade out tool, and I can understand what it is used for.

This screenshot shows the website we got our jingle from which was freesound. We chose this specific sound as we thought it was relevant for our interview and would suit the type of interview we was recording. This is the first jingle that we used which was at the beginning of our interview.

This is the second jingle we got from freesound. This is a very useful and reliable site as we are always able to find the suitable jingle for our interview. We added it to make it seem as if it was a professional interview. This will be heard at the end of our interview.

This is the last piece we produced and published on soundcloud. It lasts 1:23 seconds.

This is a screenshot of us getting feedback. We received criticism which is essential to us as we are able to use that criticism to an advantage where we can make changes to how we produce our interview and make it even better. It also allows us to correct minor problems we have which could possibly reduce - even get rid of - criticism we receive in the future.

                Fourth News Item

This news item is within the crime sector of news. I decided to choose this piece of news as it was the one that stood out the most and affected people in my local area.

                Where The News Was From

                http://www.lbc.co.uk/appeal-after-blind-man-abused-on-london-train-102671

                The Real News Broadcast

The incident occurred on a train travelling from Waterloo to Hounslow on Friday, 12 December between 4:20pm and 5pm.
The victim, a 64-year-old man, had been on his own when a group of between eight and ten youths started throwing newspapers at him. He asked them to stop and explained that he was visually impaired but the gang was unmoved by his pleas and continued to abuse him.
Scared about how the assault may escalate the man moved towards the train doors, but the gang surrounded him and taunted him further. This drove the victim to pull the emergency cord, after which a train guard came to speak to him. The gang then left the carriage and are believed to have left the train at Hounslow.
PC Michael Willoughby of the British Transport Police said: “This was a very frightening experience for the man.
“He explained to the youths that he was visually-impaired, but they appeared to take this as an excuse to escalate their behaviour.
“We need to speak to anyone on the train who might have witnessed this incident.
“Were you on that train? Did you see a gang of youths boarding the train or leaving it? Please get in touch with BTP.”

                Script

This is a short and simple script i came up with for my fourth news item. As it is a short script, i was able to use my time efficiently as it was a quick task to complete.

How It Affects My Local Area

This is considered bizarre as you would expect youths to respect elderly people and not intimidate and taunt them. It doesn't include impact as not many people will be affected by this news. It may only be his family. A couple of years ago, the same incident happened At Kilburn Park Station. Nearby you'd find an old people's home, and many of the people who live there were traumatized by this incident.

                Screenshots Of Audacity

Here, I used the fade out tool so that interview would follow on smoothly. I was already aware of how to use it therefore, I was fully capable and aware of how to use it in this recording.

                Screenshot of Jingle

I used this aggressive news jingle as I believe that the news I have chosen to talk about is utterly traumatic. The jingle genuinely relates to the news item and I strongly think that I have chosen the one which had the biggest effect

                Final Recording

This is the final recording I uploaded on Soundcloud. As you can see, it is quite short, but that is because I did this individually and decided to keep it simple.

This is the second piece of criticism I received on Soundcloud. I was able to ask someone to listen to it and give me feedback on my radio presentation which will help me with planning my next broadcast as I will know what to do and what to avoid doing.

                Fifth News Item

                The Real News Broadcast

Buses in London will be experiencing  00.51AM-23.59PM , bus workers are taking industrial action over pay terms being given to them and conditions by going on strike. Numerous routes around London will be affected because this of this strike and will cause disturbance to people who are usually going to school or to work. Here are a few bus companies in London:

                •  Abellio (Abellio London and Abellio West London)
                • Arria (Arria North Arriva North and Arriva South)
                • CT plus (Hackney Community Transport)
                • Metroline( Metroline and West Metroline)
However most people with a bus a tram ticket will able to use that as an alternate source of transport; also 16+ users with a zip oyster card with free bus and tram transport will be able to go on train for free.

                Screenshots of Audacity

This screenshot shows how I cut the sound extract. I done this because I only needed a certain part of it. The highlighted piece shows what was kept after i cut the whole sound extract. It boosted my understanding of how the tool should be used and in this case, it is used to cut of the unwanted bits that are unnecessary in the broadcast

This is the final piece. It consists of four audio recordings. Within this presentation, you will hear the presenter, two jingles and  we interviewed a fellow bus worker. In the process of structuring this presentation, I understood how to use the an Audacity tool, split.

This is the news jingle that will be heard within the audio recording. It was placed at the beginning and the end of the whole audio recording. It was taken from a real news broadcast which certain people may be more familiar with.

                Interview

There is an interview within the radio bulletin. It is a member of the Tfl service and is discussing his views on the bus strike issues. As it is a member of the Tfl service, it makes the news broadcast seem more realistic which has a bigger effect on our target audience.

                Sixth News Item

This screenshot above shows our sixth news item. It is about Brent Cross, Cricklewood who have invested massively in local roads and junctions, open spaces, and new homes. Clitterhouse Playing Fields which is within Brent Cross Cricklewood, will receive new sports pitches, tennis courts and multi-use games area with a new café, pavilion, changing rooms and public toilets.

Final script which is within the final Radio Bulletin

                Seventh news item

Our seventh news item is about the Carlton Tavern which was knocked down without any permission given by the government. The new landlady said it was okay for the men to knock down the pub despite her going to the Westminster council first. It was local; in fact,  it was very local as it was just meters away from St Georges RC Secondary school.

                Eighth news item

Our eighth news item was about Ed Miliband cutting university fees down to £6000. He promised this in regards to voting for him to win the election. This item is aimed at parent with children who are looking to go to university.

The final radio show and an example of editing

This image shows how i used the sync lock tool. It forces tracks and labels to remain synchronised if the person decides to move the tracks after the sync lock tool is enabled.

Screenshot of the jingle from Freesound

This is the sound archive we got from Freesound. It will be heard within the radio bulletin after the 4th news item. It was introduced into the bulletin to add effect by making the radio broadcast seem more realistic.

                Created jingle from GarageBand

This is the jingle we created on GarageBand. It was placed during the headlines and had one second intervals. This was done to add effect to our radio show as it sounds very dramatic, as well was the headlines. We created this specific jingle so that it would fit in perfectly to the radio show.

The screenshot above shows the editing of the title music on GarageBand. It was the first sound audio we added to our radio bulletin.

Using the envelope tool for the title music

This screenshot shows how I used the envelope tool to decrease the sound to a suitable level so that the more important sound that is also playing can be heard more clearly.

                Research and planning

                RESEARCH AND PLANNING

                Construction work

This image simply explains how the interview was constructed. I annotated it to show how each of the sounds work together and it makes it easier for me to identify each component.

The instrumental we chose for our radio show

                Why we chose this instrumental...

The group decided to use this instrumental because we thought it would relate to the public as well as the guest who joins the studio. Also, it would appeal to more of the target population as more people are familiar with the song - by it being a modern day song. Many admired radio stations have used this song and they received nothing but positive feedback such as; tune ins, additional guest appearances and most importantly... questions from the general public. By us using this meant that it would make the interview more viable to our target audience. It was also appropriate for the radio interview as there was no bad language. Most importantly, it is a jolly and enchanting song which allows people to be in a jollier mood.

                Where stories come from...

There are two main ways of finding stories which are capable of making the news. They are presented either through the radio or on television and on any other form of social media, for example; Facebook and Twitter. Either the reporter goes and finds them or the reporter hears stories from other journalists/reporters they may have as a contact. Local audiences write letters to news reporters as they believe it is news-worthy. Media outlets have references where people can inquire and share information about news stories.

Journalists are usually travelling the world to find out about news events. Typically, things are found almost everyday which could be newsworthy. They usually keep spreadsheets of names and numbers or contact books so they can establish relationships to gain more information about events that could potentially make the headlines. As journalists gain more and more relationships, they are most likely to find a vast amount of information making their job easier. They are practically doing their job non-stop as events are always going on in our world today.

There are different forms of news such as:

                • Transport
                • Government - schools, police, hospital
                • Museum
                • Local city council
                • Emergency department
                • Charity bodies
                • Churches
                • Community groups
                • Academics
                • Professionals

These are the main forms of news as you are most likely to come across news about these events. These are most popular because they contribute to our everyday lives. Also, these events affect the population so it is more commonly known and is likely to appear on the news more frequently.

                An Example of Radio Broadcasting

This is the five minute news I got on BBC Radio Scotland. It is the table of news values. I listened to each news value twice or three times to gain clear information on the topic so that I could write a brief analysis. The importance of each of these news values differed, For example, the striker Chris Broad assaults another footballer isn't important as it is about football and doesn't really have bad concerns - soft news, whereas George Osborne warns that the UK economy could be jeopardized which affects the whole economy and is hard news.

                Table of News Values

                My presentation on News

The meaning of the term news from Reece

                Codes and Conventions of News

News presenters normally work from a television studio or radio studio but when it is about a major news event, they may be in a remote location.

                1) The presenter states their name.  The reason why news presenters declare their name is because it gives a sense of responsibility and it allows the audience to know exactly who's speaking about a particular news item.

                2) There is a jingle which specifies the beginning of a radio broadcast. This creates an atmosphere for the radio broadcast and it lets the listeners know about the product and type of radio station that is being broadcasted. It also adds effect as it grabs the listeners attention. It is like a musical message which will be more memorable than a spoken one.

                3) The specialist reporter is introduced by the initial news presenter. When the specialist reporter is introduced, it is evident that they are in a completely different atmosphere. Perhaps, if the news story was about a crime investigation, you may hear sirens and police officers speaking, whereas the news presenter will be in the studio where it sounds much more quieter.

                4) Headlines at the beginning of a broadcast. Usually when you hear headlines at the begininng, you'd hear the most dramatic and important events which will then be expanded upon later on in the radio broadcast

Different Types of Research and How It's Conducted

Research can be conducted in a number of different ways.

The four main types of research are:

                • primary
                • secondary
                • quantitative
                • qualitative

Media production is a complex process and research is done at the start for production on any scale. The films and television programmes that we watch, the radio broadcasts and podcasts that we listen to, the magazines and newspapers that we read and the social websites and computer games that we interact with have all been intensively researched and planned in the pre-production stages.

Segmenting the audience into different categories makes it easier for media producers to identify and target groups of people with the same values. Media organisations therefore look for categories they can use to divide up the potential audience.

                Main classifications:

                • Culture and Ethnicity
                • Gender
                • Age
                • Social class and income

                Age

One of the most important categories within the media is age. A well known division used by media researchers is: 15 years or younger, 16–24 years, 25–44 years, 45–64 years, 65 years and over. If they want to find out about the impact of advertising on young children, they would enter the division of '15 years or younger'. A company who is looking at a different section of the market of over-55s for example, they may find it useful to know what people in the 55–60 years age category think about a particular product. Advertisers are also interested in what different age groups are listening to, reading watching and playing as they can then decide whether or not to advertise their products and services through these media.

                Gender

Gender is a significant category for audience research. Many media products are targeted at specific gender groups. One clear example of this is with magazines. There are different types of magazines which are for men and women. It is essential that the media keep up-to-date with gender stereotypes so that their products are targeted perfectly.

                Culture and Ethnicity

Media industries today, operate on a global market. Newspapers, magazines, television programmes are available to the whole of the UK. They will also try to target people all over the world. The production base in the UK for media products is continuously growing which target different cultures and ethnic groups.

                Income and Social Class

The audience can be segmented according to annual salary or type of job and social class. Establishing a  person’s income can be important, especially for advertisers who need to target the relevant income group as accurately as possible. It is no good advertising a top-of-the-range sports car to people who have a low income.

                Audience Research

                Primary Research

The questions below were answered by members of the general public. More specifically, people who live in Maida Vale and Kilburn.

                1. Do you work in or live around the area?

                2. What do you value most about Kilburn/Maida Vale?

                3. In what ways do you think the area could be improved?

                4. How do you keep up-to-date with local news? Do you receive information from friends, social          media, the radio or any other form of how news is broadcasted to you?

                5. Do you have any additional comments about Kilburn/Maida Vale?

These three recordings above are about local residents sharing their views on the area. We interviewed people of different ethnicity, gender and age. This was done so we get different opinions on the area.

Rajar (Radio Joint Audience Research Limited) was established in 1992 to work on a single audience measurement system for the radio industry, including all BBC, UK licensed and other commercial stations. company is owned by the Commercial Radio Companies Association and the British Broadcasting Corporation. They produce questionnaires and surveys so that they can easily access radio listeners opinions and make any developments to their company which will appeal to their radio audience. They provide estimates of the number of people listening to radio programmes.

Rajar is jointly owned by BBC and the RadioCentre. They introduced an online version of a radio listening diary as another collection method. Respondent engagement is censorious to the quality of the survey and it offers a choice to how people record and return their listen to their data. This will help maintain the current high levels of participation.

Coming up with the name for our Radio Station

The first stage of our interview plan was coming up with a name for the radio station. The group decided that we should keep it simple and basic to not complicate anything. After minutes of contemplating a name, we thought of Channel FM. We were inspired by other radio stations such as Kiss FM, Magic Fm, and all other popular radio stations.

                Plan Document

This table above shows the plan document that I created in order to keep up with the deadlines. I also made this schedule to keep myself organised which will allow me to continue with specific areas I need to improve in my blog. Ever so often, my blog will be updated with new information.

                 The Editorial Meeting...

This image shows the group getting together to make changes to the scripts that we wrote for our final recording which lasts 5 minutes. As you can see in the picture, we each have copies of the script that we wrote. This meeting was conducted so that we can produce our radio show without any mistakes being made. This will allow us to use our voices maturely and correctly when it comes to the official radio show. As a group, we realised that we made minor mistakes in our script so we decided to edit the script and make it clearer which is even better.

Flow chart of the Radio Bulletin

The screenshot of Microsoft Word shows the completed script. As you can see in the 'Item' column, we numbered the scripts starting from most important to least important. It looks more organised and it allows us to identify which script we need to rehearse for the final task. We had to shorten some of the individual scripts because we noticed that it would take too long to record and would exceed the five minute mark.

Applications that we used throughout our production

This is the application we used to put all our work onto. We kept track of our work on it and was able to communicate through gmail.

This is the application we used to upload our tracks onto audacity so that we could upload the sound into our blogs as they are supported files. We also used this application so we could receive feedback which will enable us to make changes to the scripts we rehearsed and recorded

This was the main application out of all. This application enabled us to to record our voices and edit our radio bulletin. This application allowed us to put  in jingles, sound archives, title music etc.
